Laser FAQ's

Q: What is the purpose of laser therapy?

Photobiomodulation, or laser therapy, is a process of photons entering the tissue and interacting with the cytochrome c complex within the cell mitochondria. This process leads to a cascade of events that promotes tissue healing and reduces pain. It is used as a treatment for both acute and chronic conditions, and post-activity recovery.

Q: Is it painful? What does it feel like?

The laser cannot go through material but must be direct to skin. You will feel a soothing warmth during the treatment. Many patients report a rapid decrease in pain during treatment.

Q: Is laser therapy safe?

Class IV Laser therapy devices were FDA cleared in 2004 for pain reduction and increasing micro-circulation. It is a safe and effective treatment option for pain relief.

Q: How long does a session last?

A laser therapy session lasts approximately 5-15 minutes depending on the area being treated and the patient's pain level. High powered lasers deliver a large amount of energy in a small amount of time, allowing for the treatment sessions to be short and still highly effective.

Q: How often will I need to be treated?

It is recommended to receive treatments 1 to 3 times a week. There is well documented support that laser therapy benefits are cumulative, so frequent treatment early in the treatment plan is recommended for best results.

Q: How many sessions will I need?

Your response to treatment and nature of the injured area play a large role in the number of treatments needed. Most laser therapy treatments plans involve 3 to 6 treatments, with some chronic or severe cases requiring more sessions.

Q: Do I have to limit my activities?

Laser therapy does not require any recovery or down time. In fact, the reduction in pain may make it easier to get back to activities. Exercise caution in getting back to activity too quickly and listen to the advice of your chiropractor.
